False Bay dive visibility forecast

False Bay is the warmer, shallower side of the peninsula. Its western shore — Simon’s Town, Miller’s Point, Partridge Point — is sheltered from the Atlantic swell but exposed to the southeaster that blows the length of the bay and arrives onshore, which is why it comes good on a northwester and blows out in summer.

The wind that governs False Bay
A northwester cleans the False Bay western shore. A sustained southeaster crosses the whole bay, arrives onshore and dirties it.
Clarity here is a lagging quantity: it is set by how hard the bottom has been stirred over the preceding days and how long the silt has had to drop out again, not by the swell in front of you right now. theviz reads six days of swell and wind history at each site, runs it through bottom-stirring physics and lets it settle three days forward, carrying five wave models crossed with three weather models through separately so the output is a distribution rather than a single number.
How to read these figures
Each number is the median of the modelled ensemble over daylight hours — half the members came out clearer, half murkier. The per-site pages add the 10th–90th percentile band and the probability of diveable conditions. A wide band means the weather models disagree about the swell or wind that will stir the bottom, which is information in itself: it is the difference between "probably 8 m" and "anywhere from 3 to 14 m".
"Diveable" is called on the weakest safety gate — entry and exit, bottom surge, current, wind or surface chop — and is independent of clarity. A site can have beautiful water and still be undiveable because the entry is unworkable.
